Prairie falcon (falco mexicanus)

This is a composite of 15 images shot at 6fps on a D300. Nikkor 300mm f4, nikkor TC-1.4E II teleconverter, f5.6 1/1600, iso1250.

This falcon was on the lower Skagit flats in W. Washington. Not a typical place to find a prairie falcon, generally a sagebrush dwelling resident of E. Washington. This one is about 150 miles from home, happily hunting the few remaining voles that were not killed in the recent flooding that completely swamped much of the area near where we photographed this bird.
